What is the right way to specify control to use monospaced font?

You need to call GetFNum and assign the font ID to the font field in ControlFontStyleRec, set kControlUseFontMask and call SetControlFontStyle().

As to getting a mono-spaced font, either let the user pick the font to use if appropriate, or hardcode Monaco or Courier.

I was dreaming about kControlFontMonospacedFont or kThemeMonospacedFont
but these do not exist :(

It is still in analyze state :(

Is it the case that system can have no monospace font installed?

I'd imagine it would certainly be possible. But not very likely.
