I know all of this, but:

- I can guarantee you not everyone installing Panther is doing what you
suggest.

- You still have a substantially "start from scratch" system, and it's
entirely possible to have bugs in software that don't manifest themselves
until you've been using it a while.

- Whatever work this would require, it would be significantly fewer
man-hours than developers will spend doing erase installs or whatever they
have to do to install it. This is definitely one of those things where YMMV.

- I assume savvy people have systems set up and the knowledge to make this
relatively painless. But not everyone has that knowledge or the hardware
resources to do so.

FWIW, I *did* try an erase install of 7B49 on a partition of my internal
drive. The installation was successful, but it wouldn't complete the startup
process. So I then installed it on an external drive which I'm not willing
to erase because I use it for other things as well. It started up fine from
that drive. I don't know what was different other than journaling on the
volume that was erased. I accept the installation process once, but any more
than once and I'm not a happy camper. However, I prefer to install on an
external drive anyway since that lets me completely disconnect it from the
computer if I want to do that for any reason.
