Finder sort order

In OS < 9 the Finder will sort alphanumericals filenames before non-alpha numericals.
For example:
A, B, C, D, ~, +

In OS 10+ the Finder sorts differently. Non-alphanumericals precede the alphas.
For example:
~, +, A, B, C, D

Is there a way to change this in any way?

I'm porting a couple of apps from classic to carbon and this has caused a problem with some of the apps a former employee has written.
