opening files by dragging their icons

hello list,

something I've been stuck with for a while that I cant work out how to do is finding out if there was an icon that dropped onto my application when it launched, and of course what it was. I've looked all over developer.apple.com and found no answers. One of you guys surely must know. Thanks again,
