Does anyone know if it is possible to plug in to the tcp/ip stack at the application layer to see what apps are creating network traffic. I am interested in writing a custom filtering tool, and I need to be able to pick up traffic on certain ports, but I also need to know which apps are initiating the traffic.

I'd like to be able to do this on 9 and X, but I am having trouble finding info related to this task.

Can anyone point me in the right direction.
