the old 'kind' resource

Sorry if this is the wrong list, It is related to carbon but just on OS 9
(which I know is officially dead).

I've added a popup menu to the Open dialog of our app, by specifying several
type codes in a NavTypeList. On both OS 9 and OS X this produces a popup
menu in the Open Dialog. On OS 9 however all of the type choices have the
same name "Foo Document", when really there are 3 different types of "Foo
Document". I did some research and it seems the thing I was missing is a
'kind' resource in the app. Unfortunately adding a 'kind' resource doesn't
seem to help the situation in the slightest. What else am I missing?

Things I've tried (I haven't tried every permutation, so if there are
several of these that I need please let me know)
-Rebuild the Desktop
-Set the BNDL bit
-Tried on a different app of which I know only 1 copy exists on the drive.
