I asked about that a few weeks ago, and at the end using GetThemeTextDimensions() was the best solution I found.

While we're on this topic, I've wondered for a long time if there is some
way to measure CG text height? Or failing that, at least to measure how
far down the descendors are drawn (since they are drawn down below the
designated Y text point)?
