Don't know either :-)

The DisplayMgr on X only attempts to translate the info from CoreGraphics, and to mimick the MacOS 9 behavior to the extent this is possible - and to the extent this has been requested in bug reports. It does not even try to go to the IOKit.

And you are right: CGDirectDisplay.h is the way to go, on X.
