Determining mouse button state

I have a case in my software where a user can be dragging an item with the left button, and (assuming they have a two button mouse) tap the right button to perform an action while dragging.

My question is, when I get this kEventMouseDown event and the kEventParamMouseButton says that it is a kEventMouseButtonSecondary, is there a way to determine if the primary button is down at that time? I looked at the kEventParamKeyModifiers, and found a btnState modifier, but that is never set. It would be nice to know the state of the button at the time the event was generated, but an asynchronous function that queried the current state of the button would do if I had to.
