Re: What do we want in Carbon? (was Modern C++)

Yes and I see no mention of it anymore. This was great work and it would be nice to roll them into Carbon and Cocoa apps. I am not looking for a huge WebObjects sized projects, just a means to connect to my mysql database, filemaker pro.... and retrieve or insert...execute sql procedures and such.

It appears it was not economical to support two languages ....however, abandoning it altogether does not seem prudent. I know I have spent a weekend or two getting an Open Source ObjC Framework working but there were issues with having libraries from compiled Mysql projects.........and then it all fell apart or 60 Minutes came on I forget which.

Why Filemaker did not seem to embrace and invest in a mature api for developers ......I do not know. I stopped using filemaker over the last 3 to 4 years for the sole fact that I was stuck with a proprietary markup language and a poorly design/ (or just poorly documented) java api. Heck maybe they did however, I do know I looked of their site for a solid year wondering if new docs were written...and gave up on the product.

Mysql is the bomb. It works on the Mac like a charm. It never complains, never hogs memory and is a soldier when it comes to reliability. Empowered with a robust api set, I can see a slew of network (mac)apps being developed. I understand the design issues from light client and heavy server apps, but there must be situation when the reverse is better. Under later, an application/system would likely sell more macs on an install. Rather than selling one or two servers.....you replace the clients......

Since something existed before, and I frequently see mentions of people wanting to use EOF within their apps...Get rid of the Java bridge and build a Class that supports basic database communication. I get the feeling that when I use a java bridge, it is going to take a hit on speed and I am compensating for a lack of native apis.

IMOO

How about a complete class of database driver objects.
MySQL, Filemaker, PostgreSQL, Oracle (no need to connect to MSSQL)

*cough* EOF/Obj-C *cough*
