It should only be a question if it's a performance bottleneck. Have you profiled your code and proved that the memory allocation routines currently being used are a problem?

Assuming performance is an issue for Mac OS 9.x and/or Mac OS 10.x, you'll probably end up with two sets of code anyhow as the optimizations employed for each OS would most likely be different.
