Re: Matching Cocoa Window Levels in Carbon

Suppose I want to use the Cocoa spell checking window (a floating Cocoa window). Ideally the user wouldn't be able to tell that this window was any different than the other floating windows in my app. Currently, since all my Carbon windows are at level zero and the Cocoa window is greater than zero, it is above all of my floating and modal windows.

Hmm, well, I see the point, but frankly, I wouldn't worry about it. Is it costing you sales? Have your users complained about it? You probably have bigger problems to solve. However, it's your app, and your cost-benefit decision.

For the most I'm looking for a good general solution to use a variety of Cocoa things in my Carbon app. Some of that is based on a general "writing on the wall" perception that over time there are going to be more places where I want to bring things in from Cocoa. A large part of it is motivated by the fact that I'm already using the font panel and in Panther it's integration with the color picker is seriously broken and causes my app to crash. The best solution to that seems to be to drop the Carbon color picker.

I suppose whether it's worth the cost-benefit to solve the layering issues boils down to a "fit and finish" issue. If the use has the font panel, color picker, and spelling checker windows open on a small screen and then can't open a file because the modal navigation window is incorrectly obscured by all of these palettes, it doesn't make my app look very good. FWIW, this ties with in with my earlier request that you guys consider making the Carbon/Cocoa integration tighter so that I don't have to decide if it's worth my time to get my UI to work right.

Thanks,
Nick
