Why not using the spellchecking services in a Carbon window?
I know you'll have to implement the UI but that should resolve the issues
you mentioned, and will give you the opportunity to customize the UI.

To be honest I've already done that. As an aside, the only thing I couldn't find was a list of available language dictionaries so I was never able to implement the multi-lingual part of the window.

The spelling checker example I gave was something of an example, because I'm playing with that as a test bed to see if it's practical to use Cocoa windows in my Carbon app. DTS says it can be done and they have sample code but not a "real-world" task.

My most pressing need is actually to use the Cocoa color panel to work around a nasty bug in the Carbon font panel. Someone in Apple evangelism suggested that I should eliminate my use of the Carbon color picker so I'm looking into it. ;->
