Menu items limitation on OS 9.

Hi,
Is there any limitation on number of menu items added in list popup or menu
on Mac OS 9.
I have created a small application, created a menu using newmenu(), added
800+ items to a menu using insertmenuitem(). The system hangs while tracking
the menu. I am using CodeWarrior3.3 and MacOS 9.2.
