Here's what I'm talking about. You should ALWAYS, in my opinion, be able to hide the current app via the "Hide App" option. The desktop is like a base, something that's always there. You should be able to hide the foreground app to get to it.
Well which one is it? First, you wanted a method to get to the Finder (which you can). But now you just want the desktop? But as others have pointed out, if you now have no application whatsoever in the foreground, where do all events get sent to? This doesn't make any sense.
If you don't like the current setup, then all I can say is file an enhancement request. But to me, the current system is a-ok. I wouldn't be surprised if your bug gets marked as "works as designed."
