You can use the kEventClassControl/kEventControlSetFocusPart carbon
event to determine if the edit text control is gaining/losing focus.

I added { kEventClassControl, kEventControlSetFocusPart } to my window
events, passed into InstallWindowEventHandler, but I never get any
kEventClassControl events. I was planning on calling GetKeyboardFocus
whenever I get a kEventControlSetFocusPart type event, to see if the
EditText has focus, but I never get there.

It's a control event, you need to install it on the EditText control directly (via InstallControlEventHandler).

In the text box? If I'm understanding, then the issue is that Edit Text
controls don't support embedding

Sorry, this is a Group Box (text only). Inside is a Forget and Learn
button. Even when I "Test Interface" in Interface Builder the buttons
can't be clicked. ???

Are you sure the controls are embedded in the group box and not merely on top? You can check by looking at the hierarchical list mode in IB (click the little list-esque control in the main nib window). You should see your buttons indented under the group box if they are embedded properly.
