The guys in Redmond figured that out in '95 with their
xxxChangeNotification functions that allow to monitor directories.
This works without *any* help from the code that makes modifications
(i.e. no need to call "notify", no need to send events, etc).
Hopefully we will see this on Mac in this millennium.

Panther supports the kqueue mechanism at the BSD API level, which can be used for file-system change notification. The Finder team didn't have time to adopt it for Panther, but I think they're interested in using it in the future.
