GetKeys & CarbonEvents

My application goes into "pause mode" if no key has been pressed within a user-set number of minutes. Within the app's WNE loop, GetKeys is called which works no matter which application is in front. However, I'd rather use CarbonEvents. Is there a CarbonEvent that will notify my application whenever a key is pressed, regardless of which app is in front? A GetKeys equivalent with something like event class kEventClassKeyboard and event kEventRawKeyDown, but on a system or global level? Does such an event occur? If so, how about global mouse movements as well?
Thanks!
Bill
