Erase a path in an overlay window

I have an overlay window I created with kOverlayWindowClass. I am want to draw drag a line in the overlay by drawing a line in color, then erasing just that line, and drawing it a new location as the mouse moves. I do not want to clear the overlay window, or clear an entire rectangle. I have tried drawing over the line with the background color, which draws a white line. I have also tried drawing over it with the Alpha set to 0.0, which does nothing (it has no effect on the old line). I have been unable to find a method to erase the line so that it is removed from the overlay window. Anyone have any ideas?

Just for a little background, I'm trying to implement a replacement for drawing with XOR mode in QuickDraw to drag a marquis, or drag a line over a background. I don't care about flipping colors, I just want to be able to do non-destructive draws.

Thanks in Advance.
