email@hidden has been providing a source code library free of charge to
manipulate the plist for the login items.

Send an email to that address and ask about LoginItemAPI. Someone should
get back to you with an attachment (hopefully the latest and greatest). At
least they had for me. :-)

I also notice "Login Items" has been renamed to "Startup Items" in
Panther...
