If you look at the root directory of each volume you will find an invisible folder named .Metadata (or something similar)._______________________________________________
cd /Volumes/Documents/
ls -la
Inside this folder the indexes are stored. Hope this is what you wanted. I would however wait for an API instead of trying to use the indexes manually, but at the very least it helps to get an idea of how the indexes are stored and managed.
