Re: Tiger, File Searching and MetaData

Thank you, that was very useful indeed.
I truly hope Apple has / will release a API to search system wide meta-data easily.
For now I'm just going to try and learn the Search-Kit API inside and out as best I can, it is truly amazing technology.

thanks again

I would assume that Apple will provide an API to access the file system meta-data index. Manually accessing the files directly using the Search-Kit does not provide what I would consider a future proof solution. If Apple decided to move the meta-data index or incorporate the index directly into the file system applications that used it directly would break. Furthermore using an API would provide optimisation opportunities in regards to cache sharing and the like. So my bet is that an API will be released (if one hasn't already been released).

As to the format of the indexes, I'm unsure. I do not have experience with the format used by the Search-Kit, so I could not say either way. However, the use of four character codes does seem to suggest that perhaps it shares some lineage with the Search Kit.

Thanks! That was exactly the information I was looking for.
I gather that the metadata file is not simply a stored Search-Kit index, by the fact that you say I should wait for an API instead of trying to use them as they are now?

Once again, thanks.

If you look at the root directory of each volume you will find an invisible folder named .Metadata (or something similar).

cd /Volumes/Documents/
ls -la

Inside this folder the indexes are stored. Hope this is what you wanted. I would however wait for an API instead of trying to use the indexes manually, but at the very least it helps to get an idea of how the indexes are stored and managed.
