Re: Auto backups

David have you actually done a restore and run from that restore for a period of time to determine the permissions did in fact carry over correctly?

Hi,

I need to auto backup users data to my Xserve. Is anyone using .Mac to do
this? If so, how's it working? If not, what are you using? I have used
Retrospect in the past but it seems to crash a lot in OSX.

Please let me know if I'm posting inappropriate questions to this list. I'm
a Mac lab manager and my past questions (How to turn FTP on a x- server) was
never addressed. I find it hard to believe that no one is FTPing to their
Xserve, so my apologizes if I'm on the wrong list!

Thanks,

David

David,

I would suggest the macos-x-server list for the FTP question. As for the backup question, take a look at the list search option at:

http://search.lists.apple.com/

and specify the macos-x-server list for the one to search and you will find extensive discussions on backups, especially on the various options.

BRU Server seems to be the most frequently suggested option, and it is the one that I implemented here at school. It has been a little flaky from the UI standpoint, but it is a winner in the options for backup media (HD, tape, etc). Very reasonably priced, especially for us in education.
