I'm also curious about this. I've done it under linux using the ext2/3
re-size tools. I believe ReiserFS also has the ability to re-size on the
fly. I've done it with JFS on IBM's AIX as well, AIX 5.2 actually
defaults to very small partitions and grows them as required. I haven't
seen one for HFS yet though although I haven't looked that hard yet.
This is a function that should be available since corporate data is
always growing. Yes backups are essential and a full backup should
definitely be done before attempting to re-size a partition. The time it
takes to delete and re-create the partitions, and then restore all the
data can be huge. Take into consideration the XRAID, how much time would
it take to restore a complete 1Tb or larger array. What if it's already
partitioned and you need to make the one of the first partitions bigger?
does this mean you need to delete all partitions and then recreate and
restore everything. Only if it goes south during the re-size.
A quick google search brought these up.

unfortunately not much else of use.
