WGM is a HUGE jump from MM. You've got a lot of reading AND TRIAL AND

Most of the trial and error comes from not taking the time to *thoroughly*
understand how Open Directory and WGM work.

It is not, under any circumstances, something you will slap together like a
cheap model and have work. But if you take the time to plan it, and
understand what you are implementing, you will find the trial and error
aspect to be minor. The more reading you do, the less trial you have. The
reverse is also true.

And, if you do not have your DNS running *correctly*, you will have a great
deal of pain with Open Directory and OS X Server. Correct DNS is not an
option, it is a requirement for proper function.

Agreed on all points.

The best place to start is the Apple docs. The Open Directory and User Management guides alone are 455 pages of docs and you really should read them from front to back.
