Hmmm...interesting. I thought you could only *RESET* an already existing user
password that way, not enable root.


The way root is disabled is that it's password is set to a null value, specifically '*'. When you "enable root" in NetInfo Manager you are simply giving it a real password. Hence the password changing apps will enable root just fine.
