Actually, the limit in v.X is 4GB if you apply all the service packs.

The limit in 2004 is 2^63 bytes or one million objects, whichever comes
first.

Actually it's a limit of 2 million objects. Since each mail or news item takes up two slots the workable limit is ~ 1 million user items. It's supposed to give a warning as you approach the limit.
