hp printers

We have an old issue with hp laserjet 1200 printers on our network. If they are unplugged, they lose their name, and default to the name HP Laserjet 1200, 12001, 12002 etc. If a printer is not turned on for a few days, then the 12001 may become 1200 and people are printing to the wrong printer. I'm guessing this must be a known issue with macs and hp 1200's - anyone have this experience or a resolution?
