When I contacted HP with the problem more than a year ago they said to
access the printer via a Web browser by typing the printer's IP address
in the address bar. They said when you set the AppleTalk name this way
that it won't lose it when the printer is powered off. It seemed that
was how I fixed the problem.
You can find the IP address by pressing the little red button next to
the network cable connection. The printer will print a summary that
includes all of the network information.

We have an old issue with hp laserjet 1200 printers on our network.
If they are unplugged, they lose their name, and default to the name
HP Laserjet 1200, 12001, 12002 etc. If a printer is not turned on for
a few days, then the 12001 may become 1200 and people are printing to
the wrong printer. I'm guessing this must be a known issue with macs
and hp 1200's - anyone have this experience or a resolution?
Thanks,
Mark
