Re: AD Integration Successes and Failures

I guess it depends on your definition of "manage". I'm not even
exactly sure what I *could* do with WGM that I'm not already doing
(and that I need to do), as I've only glanced at it.

First, all my users are just normal users - not admins. So in my
experience that makes the system relatively impervious to them. Some
minor file/folder permissions tweaks on the front end helped with
that.

I use Radmind (www.radmind.org) to manage the machines' file systems.
That not only lets me restore a machine to a state that it "should" be
in according to the loadsets on the Radmind server, it allows me to
deploy new software packages, OS updates, or just about anything I
want pseudo-automatically after installing it once on my test machine
and creating a loadset for it.

I use a login script that wipes the printers every time a user logs in
and re-installs only those printers that are defined as necessary for
that lab based on the machine's IP address.

I configure my model user (what I think of as my Default User Profile
from my Windows days) with any necessary prefs, settings, desktop
wallpaper, etc, and copy that over to where it should live so that any
user logging in via AD has their home area created and settings based
on that model user.

My script that runs to sync things up via Radmind wipes user home
areas in /Users - all except mine and Shared, and cleans up
/Volumes/Temp Space (where my users get to save their stuff while
they're working).

I've still got alot to learn about Radmind and sripting, but this
conglomeration of tools and scripts does just fine for me. I'd like
to think WGM could do something else for me, but I haven't had time to
look at it. The one thing I haven't succeeded in doing so far is
implementing a ByHosts Prefs script to enable me to utilize a logoff
screensaver, but that's next on my list.
