Laptop with Airport not finding server for signon

I am unable to get my laptops configured so that a user that is not configured on the laptop but is
configured on the server can sign on to the laptop from the signon screen.

When I start the laptop, it is not connecting to the server via the airport card immediately. I type in a
student profile and password and it is invalid. When I sign on with a user configured on the laptop,
the airport connects. I can then log off and sign on with the student profile and it finds the profile
on the server.

How do I configure the laptop so that it will check the server from the signon screen when the laptop
is newly rebooted? This is a connection problem, because the student profile will just go right up on
a non-airport connection, or after I have established the connection with a profile on the client. I
am using LDAP v.3 in the client directory access, do I need to be using active directory or something
else to accomplish this?

Or perhaps I need to define something in xserve as the airports are on a different subnet than the
wired connections.

I have xserve 10.3 and X 10.4.2 on the laptop.
