Disabling SASL?

Greetings,

Our LDAP server to which my Lab Macs authenticate for user login was upgraded over the weekend. As a result, all my 10.3 Macs don't authenticate anymore. 10.4 works, but only if I modify Directory Access and enable the LDAPv2 checkbox.

The LDAP server admin has told me if I can disable SASL on the Macs, they'll work again. I know next to nothing about LDAP and am at something of a loss here. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
