I just learned that my /var/named/db.192.168.27 file was clobbered by the DNS GUI of SA. Looks like it overwrites lines in the file when you add a new zone rather than adding to it.

Anyway, my remaining problem (on this particular issue) is that when I log into WGM from my machine on the LAN the user 'diradmin' authenticates properly. When I try from my work machine which is VPN attached to my LAN the same username fails.

If anyone has any other insight into why this might be I'm all ears.

Thanks,
David

Hi
Do you have Resolve DNS names set in WGM prefs  and which address is the reverse DNS lookup.

Basically if you want the right name resolution you can have as many dns names as you like pointing at an IP but there should be only one pointing back (reverse DNS) . Having reverse DNS setup properly is needed for OSX server. What happens when you do a nslookup on the IP address of the server.

Cheers

IIRC, WGM resolves the name of the server based on where it is running.

So it's kind of odd that on two machines on my home LAN using the same internal DNS server would get different names.
Also, this is a new problem but I'm not sure what I might have done that would cause problems to start now. Most importantly though is where is the info being cached or whatever so that I can make it go back to the way it was.

So if you are outside and getting in with VPN then take a look at how DNS is configured on that workstation.

Hmm, well I've got DNS on the computer here at work set up to use the company's ISP's DNS. The VPN connection which is just set up using Internet Connect is set to use my OSXS at home as DNS. I think that's the only way it'll connect since I don't have the ports needed for WGM and SA open to the Internet at large. I certainly believe it's something I don't have correct since I really don't know what I'm doing most of the time.

Do you have multiple IPs on that server?

I have one NIC with several IP addresses assigned to it for different reasons.

192.168.27.254 is my router
192.168.27.253 is en0 described as Main and used as my DNS server address
192.168.27.252 is en0 described as Mail and used as my mail server address
192.168.27.251 is en0 described as Other and used as the catch all for my websites

If there is any specific info I could post to help track down the problem just lay it on me.

Thanks,
David
