Several of my teachers have asked for a way to have students hand in
documents electronically and I'm looking for a quick, painless
solution. I thought about setting up a workgroup for each teacher and
having an associated groups folder owned by the teacher for each group,
but it seemed like a lot of work to manage.
So, I'm now experimenting with having students use the drop box that's
built into every teacher's home directory. There's one caveat I've
already found - if teachers have gotten into the habit of saving stuff
directly in their home directory instead of into a folder like
documents, students can see and read these files, though they can't
delete them. I'm working on having teachers clean this up now. Once
that's done, I think I'll be ready to have students begin using the
drop boxes. Are there any other files I need to worry about if
students begin browsing this directory?
Here's my other problem - to get to the folders, students have to
navigate to
Network>Servers>Volumes>Docs>Faculty>teacher_name>Public>Drop Box
(whew!!) I can't see that happening each time, so I thought I'd have
students add a shortcut to their sidebar the first time we navigate.
The problem is that every teacher's drop box has the same name and
students can't rename it. So, I thought about having teachers rename
their drop box (ex: Basham_drop box) before we add the links to the
sidebar. Any problems I might cause by doing this? What if teachers
rename their Public folder also, so they can use it to hand out
documents? Will this cause any problems?
Finally, this is going to be a pain for me to set up with every
student. Is there any way to automate the addition of this sidebar
item?
Thanks a bunch for the help,
Michelle
