mobile account creation

Hi,

I have a set of laptops that have a dual purpose for both staff and student use. What I am wanting to allow for is that students use the laptops with network accounts but that certain staff have mobile accounts so they can take work home with them. A particular machine will be allocated per staff member but used by the general student population during the day.

I thought the way to enable this was to set the Mobile Account option in Workgroup Manager to "Always" manage but not tick the "Synchronize Account for Offline Use" so the setting is not forced to create the account at login. Then I could log in with the teachers account and set the "Create Mobile Account" setting in system preferences > accounts for that user on that particular machine. This would allow that user to have a mobile account on just that machine and all other users who access the system would run from their network account. Forcing the option is not viable due to the age and skill level of the users and I can not be sure they will choose the ignore setting if they are prompted to create an account.

This setup has worked fine on my test network, but I can not get it to work on the live network as the "Create Mobile Account" open is grayed out under system preferences on the clients. On my test network the command is not grayed out and I can not identify what the cause of the difference is.

Has anyone else tried to use mobile accounts successfully in this manner?

Thanks for any ideas.

Milos
