Scheduled maintenance

I have a simple question that someone may be able to answer (I hope).

I have a lab of emacs (panther) and a G5 server (10.3.9). I know that Unix does some maintenance daily, weekly, and monthly at the wee hours of the morning, if the machine is left on, of course.

If my lab computers are left on over night at the login screen, will the maintenance occur?

If the computers go to sleep will the maintenance occur?

How necessary is it to perform this maintenance?

Should I just use MacJanitor on each machine once a month?
