Re: Managed clients with local homes?

So if I use a mobile account, but remove the /Uses share, then the user will get a local home directory, be managed, and get cached credentials to work off-line. Sounds great.

Now, how can I do this so that the person (a laptop user) can be connected to the network, still use a local home directory, but get the benefits of an auto-mounted home for background synchronization? Is this even possible?

Thanks,

Ok, so tht I can be sure I understand. I remove the Auto-mount for /
Users in the sharing section of WGM. Then, as I ad users their
records will be automatically set up to use /User/<shortname>? Do I
need to set anything manually int he Home tab of the user record?

That will work to create a network account with a local home, but ever
since 10.3 came out I've been using Mobile accounts to acheive this goal
in a more robust way.

I've not specified /Users in WGM really since 10.2.

Don't have an automount entry for your /Users on the server then.
The only reason it's mounting the one from the server is because
you must have an automount record for /Users in the OD on the server.

Hi,

So, how to you do this? How can I have a local home directory and
network user? I have not been able to figure this out with Tiger
server. You help is appreciated.

when I try it, it always wants to mount the server and user /Users/
<username> on the server.

It is standard practice now for staff to activate sharing when

Well, it's certainly possible to use authentication centrally and keep home directories on the computer you're actually logging into. That's one of the easy setup options that Mac OS X Server allows.

What you'll find is that if Ursula User has logged onto six
computers
then all six have home directories for her, each with different
things
in.
