Re: Applecare or Self-Repair

We are not a district but we are an apple authorized service provider for our campus and buy our "major buys" of mac's with parts only applecare. This way our techs repair our lab stuff with warranty parts on our time, and repair the rest of the campus as any other apple service provider might. So turn around time is pretty fast, we can respond to emergencies well, and we keep current and familiar with all the problems and how to resolve them. (Warranty or not).

(We also are authorized service providers for Dell, Sony, & IBM on our campus).

Our district is reviewing our policy of purchasing Applecare on all
Apple computer purchases. Are we overspending? Ran some numbers and
if we purchased 1000 iBooks and didn't buy Applecare but instead added
a 10% charge on the purchase for repair use, we would save approx.
$88,000. There is a lot to be said to the convenience and speed of
Apple's warranty repairs though. Apple service has almost always been
very satisfactory when repairs were needed.

I'm just curious to hear what other districts are doing.
