Re: Kernal_task taking up 70% of CPU usage?

What version of Mac OS X did you install on it? Generally, it is advisable not to install something that is older than the hardware (because the drivers may not be as compatible).

What are your power-management settings? Do the fans seem to on a lot, or the system running hot?

Try turning off IPv6 support.

Boot into single user mode (Command-S while booting), and run 'fsck -fy' until no changes are made.

Using Disk Utility, do a permissions repair, and check the SMART status of the drive.

If you've got the diagnostic disk that comes with AppleCare (I think, I don't recall ever using it myself), do a full hardware diagnostic.

If you install the latest OS on the disk (or a firewire disk), does the problem go away?

Is Spotlight indexing when the problem is occurring (check the magnifying glass, does it have a throbbing dot?)

Does the problem ever go away? If so, under what situations?

NetInfo crashing is quite worrying. Can you find more information about it in the logs?

We purchased a brand new 17" powerbook, and it has been running horridly slow lately -- I check the activity, and the kernal_task is running 70% of the CPU usage... the whole time! Any recommendations to further investigate and combat such a terror?
