Mail has really freaked out. Yes, that's a technical term.
150-plus users, new 10.4.2 image on the clients, 10.4.2 XServes --
all new installs. All was fine until two days ago, when Mail started
exhibiting oddness, then it has spread to most of the admin staff
users by today.
Off-site host. Email server is fine (IMAP/Webmail showing all mail
coming in, can send mail out via webmail). Seems to affect network
homes only, local homes not having problems. All of the users' mail
accounts were created from scratch in Tiger, and mailboxes were
imported from the Panther version.
Problems:
- Mail won't send, but no indication of why -- no "sending..."
progress indicator on the Sent Mail box, no messages in the Sent
Mail. Connection to SMTP server is fine. It appears to connect to the
SMTP server, but then nothing happens in the Mail app.
- email already downloaded and had been fine at one time, now
suddenly showing "this message hasn't been downloaded" in the body.
- rebuilding the mailbox database only results in multiple copies of
the same email, all of them with the error "this message hasn't been
downloaded."
- clicking on an email header in the list might show a different
email in the body
- create new message, save as draft, the Draft box shows one message
in it, click on the Drafts box and the message disappears
- Mail indicates in the Activity window that it's downloading mail,
but no mail shows up in the Inbox. Restarting Mail might make it show
up, but all the messages are now unread.
- deleted old account files, created a new account from scratch, Mail
says it's downloading 211 messages but none of them show up in the
InBox or the /Library/Mail folder
Things tried:
-- deleting old keychain and related .plist files, recreated keychain
-- rebuilding mailbox database (only resulted in multiple copies of
each message)
-- reimaging the computer
-- deleted Adobe fonts from the image (causing problems in Office,
what the heck)
-- deleted ~/Library/Mail and ~/Library/Preferences/
com.apple.mail.plist, created new account
-- created a whole new home folder
-- Norton AntiVirus 10 scans on server, just for fun
Anyone else seeing this? Any ideas?
Thanks.
