Using Workgroup Manager, I have the computers the two Mac labs I manage in
two lists (Lab1 and Lab2 for simplicity's sake here). And they have,
supposedly, an ALWAYS managed preference to go to MY G5 server, at its IP
address on port 8088 (all set up in Server Admin) to get their software
updates. I thought I'd try it, with the new Quicktime 7.0.2 update released
this week, but lo and behold, they're still going to apple.com to get
updates! Am I missing a setting somewhere?

There really aren't many settings to miss. I've had all kinds of ridiculous problems with Software Update Server.

1. On one of the systems, fire up Terminal, type "defaults read com.apple.SoftwareUpdate" and post the output.
2. When you run the Software Update (GUI) program, in the title of the window it should list your server. Does it?
3. In a web browser, go to your Software Update Server URL. Click the index.sucatalog link. Take a look at the URLs in the file. Do they list your server, or Apple's?

If your experience is anything like some of mine, step 3 will show that the catalog file is pointing to the Apple servers for the actual downloads. I think I fixed this just by stopping the Software Update Server service and starting it again.
