I can't take credit for the other fix. A very nice person named Mike Matz sent me the information regarding "manually specifying the directory server in Directory Access". Thanks Mike and Ian for answering my questions!

Forgot to CC the list on this one. Steve had another good idea, and
reports success with it: manually specifying the directory server in
Directory Access' search order.
