OK, after another harrowing week, I have solved the RC/SRI issues in the district. We had a combination of old installs of Reading Counts, a new SRI purchase and an OS 9 to OS X server and client migration (yeah, I know, we're slow) that all played as variables in this mix. Here is the quickest summary I can offer: Do a fresh install of the server and don't tell it to use an old SMS_DATA folder. Get your old data into the SMS_DATA folder by doing a restore from the .sit file backup. We did have database corruption in 3 of 11 installs that happened just by doing the database restore/upgrade. We attempted to solve the problem by doing what Scholastic tech support calls a DB_STAT refresh. Two of the three problem installs gave me a -8065 error when attempting to perform their steps. Performing the steps by the OS X CLI didn't help. What I learned about the -8065 error, that Scholastic couldn't tell me, is that it means that a file (or a few) are corrupted in some way that causes problems in the finder. However, if you determine which files they are, you can drag them to the trash and then complete the "refresh" as they suggest. In our case it was the SRI question files. Things also seemed to go cleaner when we took our version 1.3 database to version 2.0 prior to version 3.0. Not surprising, but also not documented. When running on single processor servers, this is slow enough that we recommend a maximum of 10 students simultaneously. Dual-processor servers seem to make enough difference that an entire class (25) can take the test. Hope this is useful to some of you. Further, from what we're seeing, Read 180 can corrupt a scholastic "database" (and I use the term loosely because it's really a collection of flat files) and screw up SRI and Reading Counts. -- Gary Needham, Interim Director of Technology Kearney Public Schools, Kearney, Nebraska 308-698-8014 |
