In our mixed lab environment (G4s and G5s with 10.3.9, and home
directories
hosted on a Windows 2003 server), our photography/computer graphics
teacher
would like to have "handout" folders that she can use with ARD to
pass out
documents for the kids to copy back into their home directory
documents
folders. I'm thinking I need to log into each machine with the
'ardadmin'
account I created (a local admin account JUST for ARD use on each
machine),
create a handout folder on each, owned by 'ardadmin' and with 755
permissions (owner: read/write/execute, group: read/execute, others:
read/execute). I'm not monkeying with group folders right now,
because those
would have to go onto the G5 Tiger server, and I'm not sure how
well the two
would get along, mounting a group folder from the one, and a home
directory
from the other. I'm also not sure how the teacher would be able to
"broadcast" files from her computer to the group shared folders.
I'm open to
any advice/suggestions about this.
I think you've got it right. Just use ARD's Copy Files feature. The
teacher will need to manually input the destination path to the
folder you've created (i.e. "/Handouts"). There really isn't much to it.
I was faced with a similar situation, but I needed to copy several GB
of data to an entire lab. This takes long enough that it had to be
automated overnight. I came up with a simple solution using rsync. If
anyone would like details, let me know.
