If anyone wants to implement Network home folders with 10.4.x clients, I'd suggest you put it on hold.
We're having tons of authentication problems with iPhoto, Final Cut Express 2.0, some iMovie quirkiness, Group folder access, Group folder in Dock preference, etc. Even Snapz QT saving on network home folder hit a big snag. (had to do a sym link to local HD to save the QT .mov for bug filing.)
It seems Finder's handling of file access with network home folder mounts is the culprit. Maybe the new ACL has something to do with it. I've been fighting fire since start of school year to be able to investigate more than I would like.
The issues have nothing to do with server versions, which I had thought initially. But after downgrading the server from 10.4.2 to 10.3.8, the problems persisted. Only by chance with a "back from ACPP repair" iMac still at 10.3.8 did I find out that the problem lies squarely on 10.4 client. Subsequent tests showed it affects all released 10.4 versions.
All local users on 10.4.x clients have no such problems at all. Funny thing is some users with network home folders not created with 10.4.x client (returning users from last year) exhibit no such problem as well.
I have filed bug reports with Apple. Let's see if the fix would be in the next version.
