Browsers in a mixed environment

I've discovered that our web design class is having problems with a couple
of browsers. I'm betting that this is a permissions/preferences issue, but
I'm not quite sure where to check. All of the students log on as AD, and for
the purposes of testing, I myself logged in as an Active Directory user.

Firefox 1.0.x (trying to go to 1.0.7) is complaining that the "Default User"
profile is in use, though it knows that profiles are to be stored in MY user
folder on our Windows '03 server, where all of our user home directories are
kept. If I attempt to make a new profile, it likewise puts this into the
correct network home directory, but then complains that the profile is
already in use, and Firefox cannot be used at all. Safari allows use, but
will NOT allow anyone to save new bookmarks, and for me it attempted to open
some keychain item but I'm not sure where. I'm also about to test the new
"free" version of Opera (8.5), as the currently installed version asks
whether or not the user wants the advertised version or not. Any suggestions
are welcome.
