Re: One user's login issue

I saw this for the first time this morning on an eMac with a fresh 10.4 install (from 10.3.9, but archived, single, admin user data and network settings).

I just left it and it sorted itself out eventually. I had already spent hours on the machine and was majorly annoyed with the wait, but at least it wasn't fatal...!

Looked to me like it was just Spotlight indexing the drive... but a very annoying time for it to happen.

Also, bizarrely, at that boot I got no 'registration page, whereas after a system update and 10.4.2 install, on restart it *did* put a 'registration' window as opposed to a full screen version!

I've come across this problem at a client's where trying to login as a specific user causes just the spotlight icon(this is a 10.4.2 system) on the top right of the menubar to show up and nothing else (i.e. no "Finder File Edit View" etc and no dock shows up). The only way out is to hard boot the system or ssh in as another user, su to root and start killing processes belonging to the problematic user (which kicks the user off and I'm back in the system login window). I tried deleting all of the problematic user's com.apple.* preferences and then his entire Preferences folder, all to no avail. It keeps hanging at the abovementioned point at login. If I login as another user, everything is fine. Now, since it's only that one user, it has to be something to do with that user only, not a system-wide problem so I'm not looking at /Library/Preferences or other system-wide locations. Any ideas as to how I can get that user to login successfully? There are no server connections at this point.
