Users from other LDAP database

This is the first time I'm delving into the world of Directory Services. Conceptual Hurdle...

I've got an OSXS that uses its own OpenDirectory, as well as the University's college-wide LDAP, for account lookup. I want to use the OSX Server to host mobile home directories for several users. One conceptual problem I have is creating home directories on the XServe for users who are in the University-wide LDAP database. I understand that I can set the owner of a home folder to the ID of any user. However, is there anything special I need to do in Workgroup Manager or elsewhere to use that home folder for mobile accounts and other management functionality? I don't have access to the University LDAP to change their home folder entry, nor would I want to. The idea being that these mobile home directories on the XServe would be in addition to the home listed in the University LDAP. Does this question make sense?

In the bigger picture, can anyone suggest documentation for understanding directory usage at this level? The Server Essentials books are good, but I need something more in-depth.

thanks,

Jaime
