Well said....I agree. I generally use the Disk Utility approach
after each update. Troubleshooting often requires something more in-
depth.

I am aware of this. However, Disk Utility only checks and resets the
permissions on important directories, not everything that may be a
factor in
a problem.
In cases like these I usually like to check the locations manually
to verify
that the ownership and permissions are set to allow users and
applications
to place files in. This also forces other problems (like beyond
quota, out
of disk space, unmounted drive, etc) to become very apparent.
Disk Utility may verify permissions, but a good sanity check with the
terminal is what I always go for. But to each their own I guess.
