Thread-topic: New school using VOIP on the network

Unfortunately nothing extremely specific. Its one of those "you'll have to
see", but most often when any of our clients have temporarily changed their
IP (some often thinking that its ok to switch it to dhcp briefly and then
back) their DNS server 9 out of 10 times has broken and won't start up. That
is the most common thing I have seen. As far as VOIP on the network, we had
a school district who put one in a year ago, a bunch of CISCO brand,
district wide. There were no problems at all, accept for the pain of the
company doing that install having to put in some powered switches (they were
powering the phones through the CAT 6 cable instead of having the phones
have AC adaptors) and them stealing network ports and unplugging stuff from
the patch panels. (Think district wide, and then try to imagine tracing down
all those unplugged network jacks.) But as far as any technical problems,
there weren't any. The IP phones were just as good of network citizens as
any IP device on a network. The features were pretty great too. Especially
what the server running the phones was capable of. I loved all call parking
type features where you could park a call, drive to another school, and pick
the call back up 8 miles away at another school. Pretty neat stuff.
